Where he parts from Ḥafṣ

30 rules · 78 examples

Transcribed from Vol. I pp. 222–229.

Read this as a list of differences, not a complete account

The author makes Ḥafṣ the base and records for every other transmitter only where he diverges from Ḥafṣ — she says so outright at Vol. I p. 187. So the rules below are not everything Khallād ʿan Ḥamzah does; they are the places he parts from Ḥafṣ. Everything not listed here, he shares with him. Ḥafṣ’s uṣūl in full →

  1. 1

    Saying the seeking-of-refuge quietly

    ikhfāʾ al-istiʿādhah

Ḥamzah is soundly reported to have said the 'aʿūdhu bi-llāh' under his breath rather than aloud, so that only he heard it.

  2. 2

    No basmalah between two sūrahs

    tark al-basmalah bayna al-sūratayn

Ḥamzah does not say the basmalah between two sūrahs at all; he runs the end of one straight into the beginning of the next. The one exception is between al-Nās and al-Fātiḥah, where every reader says it. Between al-Anfāl and Barāʾah he may stop, make a brief breathless pause, or join. Some authorities recommend a sakt at the four 'bright' junctures for reciters who join, but the verified position is that those four are treated no differently from any other juncture.

Khallād and the zāy-coloured ṣād of 'al-ṣirāṭ'

    ishmām al-ṣād ʿinda Khallād

This is the clearest single mark separating the two transmitters. Khalaf colours the ṣād of 'al-ṣirāṭ' and 'ṣirāṭ' with a trace of zāy — a voiced buzz on the emphatic ṣ — at every occurrence in the Qurʾān. Khallād does it in ONE word only: the first occurrence, in al-Fātiḥah. Even there the transmission from him is divided — al-Dānī read it to him with a pure ṣād from Ṭāhir b. Ghalbūn, and with the zāy-coloured ṣād from Abū al-Fatḥ Fāris, and the Ḥirz and the Taysīr give only the latter. The author holds that both ways should be taken up.

Colouring every vowelless ṣād that stands before a dāl

    ishmām al-ṣād al-sākinah qabla al-dāl

A vowelless ṣād immediately before a dāl is coloured with zāy in twelve words, and this Khallād shares with Khalaf: 'aṣdaqu', 'yaṣdifūna', 'wa-taṣdiyatan', 'taṣdīqa', 'fa-ṣdaʿ', 'qaṣdu', 'yaṣduru'. But over 'al-muṣayṭirūn' and 'bi-muṣayṭir' the transmission from Khallād splits: most report him colouring them, while al-Dānī's second way from Abū al-Fatḥ leaves them plain. Khalaf colours them without divergence.

    ḍamm hāʾ ʿalayhim

Where Ḥafṣ has a kasrah on the hāʾ of 'ʿalayhim', 'ilayhim' and 'ladayhim', Ḥamzah has a ḍammah — 'ʿalayhum' — and keeps it whether joining or stopping. Where the plural mīm must be voweled because a vowelless letter follows, both hāʾ and mīm take a ḍammah while joining; on stopping the mīm goes silent and the hāʾ keeps its ḍammah.

The verse-end tāʾ assimilations, and Khallād's additional two

    idghām tāʾ al-taʾnīth

Both transmitters merge the tāʾ of 'bayyata' into the ṭāʾ of 'ṭāʾifatun', the two nūns of 'a-tumiddūnani bi-mālin', and the feminine tāʾ into the following ṣād, zāy and dhāl in the oath-openings of al-Ṣāffāt and al-Dhāriyāt, with no hint of the lost vowel and with the preceding alif lengthened. Khallād alone extends this to two more oath-openings — 'fa-l-mulqiyāti dhikran' in al-Mursalāt and 'fa-l-mughīrāti ṣubḥan' in al-ʿĀdiyāt — and even there he is reported both ways: assimilating by Abū al-Fatḥ's line, keeping them clear by Abū al-Ḥasan's.

    The pronoun hāʾ

    hāʾ al-kināyah

In a set of jussive verbs the pronoun hāʾ is closed with a sukūn: 'yuʾaddih ilayk', 'nuʾtih minhā', 'nuwallih', 'wa-nuṣlih'. In 'li-ahlihi mkuthū' the hāʾ takes a ḍammah, and 'fīhi muhānā' has a short hāʾ. On 'wa-yattaqhi' the transmitters part: Khalaf has only the fully drawn-out hāʾ, whereas Khallād has two ways — drawn out by Abū al-Ḥasan's line, silent by Abū al-Fatḥ's. 'Wa-mā ansānīhu' and 'ʿalayhu llāha' take a kasrah on the hāʾ, which obliges thinning the lām of the divine name.

The brief pause before a hamzah

    al-sakt ʿalā lām al-taʿrīf wa-shayʾ

A momentary breathless stop before a hamzah — no breath taken, just a checked instant of silence. It can apply to the word 'shayʾ' in any form, to the definite article when it falls on a hamzah ('al-ākhirah', 'al-anhār'), and to any word-final vowelless consonant followed by a hamzah ('man āmana', 'khalaw ilā', 'ʿadhābun alīm'). Khallād's two ways are: no sakt anywhere (Abū al-Fatḥ's line), or sakt on the article and 'shayʾ' only (Abū al-Ḥasan's line). Khalaf, by contrast, always has some sakt — either on all three settings or on the first two. A madd letter before the hamzah is excluded from the third setting altogether. All of this governs joined recitation only; on stopping, 'shayʾ' takes the vowel-transfer or the assimilation, and the article takes either sakt or the vowel-transfer from both transmitters — reading it plainly with no sakt is not allowed.

Ḥamzah's treatment of the hamzah when stopping — the vowelless hamzah

    waqf Ḥamzah ʿalā al-hamz: al-hamzah al-sākinah

The chapter Ḥamzah is best known for, and it applies only when he stops on the word — never in continuous reading. Two accounts are given: the morphological one (better known) and the orthographic one favoured by al-Dānī. Morphologically, a hamzah is either vowelless or voweled. The vowelless kind occurs in five positions: medial by nature ('maʾkūlin', 'al-muʾminūn', 'adh-dhiʾb'); made medial by a prefixed letter ('faʾtū'); made medial by a preceding word ('al-hudā iʾtinā', 'al-maliku iʾtūnī', 'wa-li-l-arḍi iʾtiyā'); word-final and permanently silent ('am lam yunabbaʾ', 'wa-hayyiʾ'); and word-final, silent only because of the stop ('wa-qāla l-malaʾu', 'yastahziʾu', 'ini mruʾun'). In all five the treatment is one: the hamzah is replaced by a long vowel matching the vowel before it — ā after fatḥah, ū after ḍammah, ī after kasrah. Two riders: in 'anbiʾhum' and 'wa-nabbiʾhum' the hāʾ may take a ḍammah or a kasrah; in 'tuʾwī', 'tuʾwīhi' and 'wa-riʾyan' the resulting letters may be kept distinct or merged. The alif of 'al-hudā iʾtinā' is not inclined, on the preferred view.

A voweled hamzah after a vowelless letter

    al-hamzah al-mutaḥarrikah baʿda sākin

A voweled hamzah preceded by a vowelless letter divides four ways. (1) After an ordinary consonant, the hamzah's vowel moves back onto it and the hamzah disappears — 'masʾūlan' → 'masūlan', 'al-khabʾa' → 'al-khaba'. (2) After an alif, a medial hamzah is softened to a sound between hamzah and its own vowel, with the alif long or short ('jāʾanā', 'khāʾifīna', 'al-malāʾikah'), and a final hamzah becomes an outright alif with long, medium or short length ('jāʾa', 'minhu l-māʾu', 'ʿalā sawāʾin'). (3) After an added wāw or yāʾ, the hamzah becomes a letter of the same kind and merges into it — 'khaṭīʾatan' → 'khaṭiyyatan'. (4) After an original wāw or yāʾ, two schools are reported: treat them as ordinary consonants and transfer the vowel, or treat them as added letters and convert-and-merge.

    al-hamzah al-mutaḥarrikah baʿda mutaḥarrik

A voweled hamzah after a voweled letter is settled by the pairing of the two vowels. Fatḥah after ḍammah: it becomes a wāw ('muʾajjalan' → 'muwajjalan'). Fatḥah after kasrah: it becomes a yāʾ ('fiʾatun' → 'fiyatun'). Kasrah after ḍammah ('suʾila'): softened halfway, though al-Akhfash makes it a pure wāw. Ḍammah after kasrah ('anbiʾūnī', 'mustahziʾūna'): softened halfway, al-Akhfash making it a pure yāʾ; and a way is reported from Ḥamzah of deleting the hamzah and putting a ḍammah on the preceding letter. Every remaining pairing — fatḥah after fatḥah, kasrah after kasrah or fatḥah, ḍammah after ḍammah or fatḥah — is simply softened halfway.

A hamzah made medial by a prefix, and the orthographic account

    al-hamz al-mutawassiṭ bi-zāʾid wa-l-madhhab al-rasmī

Where the hamzah is medial only because a prefix has been attached, two ways are reported: pronouncing it in full (Abū al-Ḥasan's line) or lightening it (Abū al-Fatḥ's line). Ten such prefixes occur in the Qurʾān — the 'hā' of attention, the 'yā' of calling, lām, bāʾ, wāw, the interrogative hamzah, fāʾ, kāf, sīn, and the definite article. The second, orthographic account is reported from Sulaym from Ḥamzah: at the stop he followed the written shape of the ʿUthmānic muṣḥaf — a hamzah written on an alif becoming an alif, on a wāw a wāw, on a yāʾ a yāʾ, and one with no written seat simply deleted — al-Dānī, al-Shāṭibī and later scholars adding the condition that the result be sound Arabic.

Hinting at the vowel of a lightened hamzah

    al-ishārah bi-l-rawm wa-l-ishmām

Once the hamzah has been lightened, its vowel may still be hinted at — by rawm (a faint half-voiced trace of the vowel) or ishmām (shaping the lips for a ḍammah without sounding it) — as long as a final hamzah has not simply become a madd letter. Four situations allow the hint: where the vowel was transferred onto the preceding consonant; where the hamzah became a yāʾ or wāw and merged into what precedes; where a voweled hamzah became a wāw or yāʾ under the orthographic account; and where it did so on al-Akhfash's account. Where the hamzah has become a plain long vowel — 'iqraʾ' → 'iqrā', 'nabbiʾ' → 'nabbī' — no hint is possible.

Nasalisation when nūn merges into wāw or yāʾ

    ghunnat al-nūn ʿinda al-wāw wa-l-yāʾ

The dropping of the nasal hum when a vowelless nūn or a tanwīn merges into a following wāw or yāʾ is Khalaf's alone. Khallād keeps the ghunnah — he holds the nasal hum over the doubled letter, as Ḥafṣ does.

Assimilation of a vowelless letter, and Khallād's extra cases

    al-idghām al-ṣaghīr wa-ziyādāt Khallād

Khallād's assimilations run wider than Khalaf's at three points. First, the dhāl of 'idh' is merged into the whistling letters (sīn, ṣād, zāy) from his transmission only — both transmitters merge it into tāʾ and dāl. Second, he merges a jussive bāʾ into a following fāʾ, though in 'wa-man lam yatub fa-ulāʾika' he is given a free choice between merging and keeping it clear by Abū al-Fatḥ's line. Third, over 'bal ṭabaʿa' he is reported both ways — merged by Abū al-Fatḥ's line, clear by Abū al-Ḥasan's. And where 'irkab maʿanā' is otherwise read clear, Khallād is again reported both ways: clear by Abū al-Ḥasan, merged by Abū al-Fatḥ. The dāl of 'qad', the silent feminine tāʾ, and the lāms of 'bal' and 'hal' behave the same in both transmissions.

Inclining every alif that goes back to a yāʾ

imālat kull alif munqalibah ʿan yāʾ

Ḥamzah has the widest inclining of the seven, and it is shared by both transmitters. Every alif that is demonstrably a transformed yāʾ, in a noun or a verb, is given the full grade — pronounced right over towards 'ee' — in joining and in stopping alike. Excluded are words whose origin is disputed ('al-ḥayāt', 'Manāt'), an alif that is an added letter rather than a transformed one ('qāʾimun'), and an alif that is not itself the transformed letter ('ʿaṣāya', 'daʿāhu'). A wāw-word that grows past three letters becomes a yāʾ-word and is inclined too.

Note: inclining lapses when the alif is dropped

    tanbīh: imtināʿ al-imālah

If a vowelless letter follows the inclined alif and the alif is dropped because of it, the inclining lapses — there is no longer a sound to incline. Whether that vowelless letter is a tanwīn or anything else makes no difference; stopping restores both the alif and the inclining.

    Examples · 1

Joined, the alif is dropped for the tanwīn and there is no inclining; stopping restores both.

    yāʾāt al-iḍāfah

Ḥamzah's treatment of the possessive 'my' yāʾ is largely a matter of silencing it where other readers open it. The book's list runs through p. 229 and is shared by both transmitters.

  • p. 226 — the book says Ḥamzah merges the dhāl of ﴿إِذْ﴾ 'في أحرف الصفير من رواية خلاد'. The example ﴿إِذْ صَرَفْنَآ﴾ is supplied here as a representative case of a ṣafīr letter; the book itself gives no verse at that point.
  • p. 226 — the free choice in ﴿وَمَن لَّمْ يَتُبْ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ﴾ is transcribed as printed; the sūrah reference (al-Ḥujurāt 49:11) is supplied, not given by the book.
  • pp. 224–225 — the waqf-on-hamzah chapter is transcribed in full as to structure; some of the book's example words within each class were not transcribed one by one.
  • p. 225 — the orthographic account is summarised from the page-scale reading; the book's own illustrative word at that point could not be resolved, so ﴿ٱلْمَلَؤُا۟﴾ (verified on p. 217) stands in as the type case.
  • p. 226 — the ḥarakāt of ﴿مَنَوٰةَ﴾ (Manāt) were read at page scale only and not zoomed.
  • p. 226 — two words in the list of extended wāwī verbs (printed roughly as زكاها and فأنجاه) could not be resolved between the dagger-alif and alif-maqṣūrah spellings and have been dropped from the quoted statement.
  • p. 229 — the enumeration of yāʾāt al-iḍāfah is transcribed as a block; individual place-counts follow the printed text.
