QirāʾātThe ten readings

How to read the table

The layout is not a modern invention — it is the author’s own method, set out in her introduction. Five rules govern everything on the page.

  1. 1

    Ḥafṣ carries the full verse

The top line of every block is the complete āyah in Ḥafṣ ʿan ʿĀṣim, in ʿUthmānī orthography, numbered by the Kūfī count of the King Fahd Complex muṣḥaf.

  2. 2

    Only divergences appear below

Each row beneath belongs to a reader who differs. Nothing is printed but the word that differs — placed directly under its counterpart in the Ḥafṣ line.

  3. 3

    A missing row means agreement

The author deletes every row that carries no divergence, “regardless of the measures of madd”. So the row count changes from verse to verse, and silence is information.

  4. 4

    Colour carries meaning

Red marks the element that actually differs. Green circled numerals give the order in which each reader is performed when all ten are combined in one recitation. Blue marks the headword of a grammatical note.

  5. 5

    The footnotes cite their evidence

(ش) introduces the verse of al-Shāṭibiyyah that records the variant for the seven; (د) the verse of al-Durrah al-Muḍiyyah for the three that complete the ten.
