QirāʾātThe ten readings

About this edition

This site is a digital edition of البسط في القراءات العشر al-Basṭ fī al-Qirāʾāt al-ʿAshr by Samar al-ʿAshshā, published 1424 AH / 2004 CE in six volumes. The book presents the entire Qurʾān with Ḥafṣ on top and every divergence of the ten readings aligned beneath it, by the paths of al-Shāṭibiyyah and al-Durrah al-Muḍiyyah.

The author’s method

She set out six rules in her introduction. The one that shapes every page is the third:

«الأمر الذي دفعني إلى اختصاره بحذف كل سطر خالٍ من رقم تسلسلي من أرقام جمع القراءات، أو خالٍ من الألفاظ القرآنية المخالفة لرواية حفص، وهذا بغض النظر عن مقادير المدود.»

— every row that carries no divergence is deleted, regardless of the measures of madd. So the number of rows changes from verse to verse, and an absent row is a statement: that reader agrees with Ḥafṣ here.

Where a reader’s two transmitters usually agree she names only the reader (Ibn Kathīr, al-Kisāʾī, Abū Jaʿfar, Yaʿqūb, Khalaf al-ʿĀshir); where they often differ she names both (Qālūn/Warsh, al-Dūrī/al-Sūsī, Hishām/Ibn Dhakwān, Shuʿbah/Ḥafṣ, Khalaf/Khallād). Fourteen comparison rows in all.

A note on colour

The printed edition uses three colours deliberately: red for the element that diverges, green for the recitation-order numerals, blue for the headword of a grammatical note. The scans this edition was transcribed from are black and white, so that information was lost in reproduction. The colours you see here are reconstructed from the structure of the data, not recovered from the images.

How the text was assembled

The Ḥafṣ line on top of every table is simply the standard ʿUthmānī text, so it is generated from a digital muṣḥaf rather than read off a scan — 6,236 āyāt, checked word for word against the printed source.

Everything else — which readers diverge, at which word, with what wording, and the footnotes behind them — is transcribed by hand from the scanned volumes, one page at a time. That work is ongoing, and the site only shows verses that have actually been collated. A verse marked needs review has not yet been checked a second time against the page.

Recitations

The site is built to carry one recitation per transmission, verse by verse, so the same āyah can be heard in each reading while following the aligned text. The playback controls are already in place and sit inert until recordings are registered.
