Hiding the tanwīn at ghayn and khāʾ

إخفاء التنوين والنون الساكنة عند الغين والخاء

ikhfāʾ al-tanwīn ʿinda al-ghayn wa-l-khāʾ

Ghayn and khāʾ are throat letters, so the nūn before them normally takes iẓhār — everyone sounds it plainly. Abū Jaʿfar alone treats these two as he would the fifteen letters of ordinary ikhfāʾ: the nūn is half-hidden and the nasal hum kept. Three words are excepted and sounded plainly even by him: يَكُنْ غَنِيًّا، فَسَيُنْغِضُونَ، وَٱلْمُنْخَنِقَةُ.

Example

قَوْلًا غَيْرَ

al-Baqarah 2:59

Abū Jaʿfar hides the tanwīn at the ghayn with ghunnah; the rest sound it.
