QirāʾātThe ten readings

Natural prolongation

المد الطبيعي

al-madd al-ṭabīʿī

A long vowel with nothing after it to lengthen it further is held for two counts (ḥarakāt). Every one of the ten agrees. It is the yardstick the other madds are measured against — when a reader is said to prolong to four or six, that is four or six of these units.

How it sounds

About the time it takes to say two short vowels.
