Soft-letter prolongation
مد اللين
madd al-līn
و and ي preceded by a fatḥah are 'soft' rather than fully long — as in خَوْف and بَيْت. When a pause makes the following letter vowelless, they may be stretched like a long vowel. Warsh treats them distinctively when a hamzah is involved.
