سُورَةُ عبس
ʿAbasa— He Frowned
Notes & justification
The Shāṭibiyyah verse gives the naṣb of فَتَنفَعَهُ to ʿĀṣim (Ḥafṣ and Shuʿbah); everyone else reads rafʿ. The naṣb is explained by an implied أَنْ: the verb is the answer, with fāʾ, to something that is not an affirmation — لَعَلَّ — just as the fāʾ answers the six non-affirmative things (command, prohibition, question and the like), since لَعَلَّ shares with them in expressing something other than a statement of fact; compare ﴿لَعَلِّىٓ أَبْلُغُ ٱلْأَسْبَٰبَ … فَأَطَّلِعَ﴾ for those who read it with naṣb. The rest read rafʿ, taking it as coordinated with يَزَّكَّىٰ, which is in the indicative: as if He said, 'perhaps he would purify himself, or perhaps the reminder would benefit him'. (al-Mūḍiḥ 3:1340)
fa-tanfaʿuhu: in place of its rafʿ, ʿĀṣim has the naṣb; and annā ṣababnā (80:25) — its fatḥah was recited by the Kūfans (thābit).
