al-ʿAṣr— The Declining Day

On the rāʾ of these three words: joined, it carries its kasrah and all read it thin (tarqīq); stopped upon, the kasrah is gone and giving the rāʾ its full body (tafkhīm) is, in the couplet's words, the more universal and inclusive position.

It self-evidently carries Warsh's transfer of the hamzah's vowel to the sākin before it, in both states — joined and stopped upon. See vol. 1, p. 18.

Khalaf ʿan Ḥamzah — and Khallād with khulf — read with sakt on the lām of the definite article in continuity. At a stop, each of the two has both naql and sakt open to him; stopping with plain taḥqīq and no sakt is not permitted. (See al-Wāfī: 104.)
