Hinting the ḍammah in a passive verb
شمإشمام الضمّ في المبنيّ للمجهول
ishmām al-ḍamm
A handful of passive verbs whose first letter carries a kasrah — قِيلَ، غِيضَ، سِيقَ، حِيلَ، سِىٓءَ — are read by some with a hint of the original ḍammah blended into that kasrah, so قِيلَ leans toward qūīla without becoming it. Hishām, al-Kisāʾī and Ruways read this way; the rest keep a clean kasrah.
How it sounds
Audible, unlike the ishmām of pausing: the vowel itself is coloured, rather than the lips merely rounding after the sound has stopped.
